Prepping the panel for gilding on “Capricorn”. The base is a mixture of red bole clay, rabbit skin glue and water, this is what the gold will eventually “stick” to. The first layer is very thin, followed by many layers of bole allowing each pass to dry in between. The bole is then sanded perfectly flat using these crazy little sanding pads that go up to like 12000 grit. Not only will any imperfections be seen when the gold is applied, they’ll actually be magnified. Final step is the “shoe shine”
