In memory of Randy Craig Wolfe (February 20, 1951 – January 2, 1997), known as Randy California, was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter, and one of the original members of the rock group Spirit, formed in 1967. Randy California w/ Scott Monahan (Spirit) on Art Fein’s Poker Party, 1993 15 year old “Randy California” played with Jimi Hendrix in New Your for the summer of 1966. He later formed 70’s rock group Spirit. — Randy California drowned in the Pacific Ocean in 1997 at the age of 45

Randy California would have been 73 years old today. He was never found after a Hawaii riptide event. One of the great Rock guitarists of our time. The third concert I ever saw (1968) featured Spirit, Vanilla Fudge, and Led Zeppelin as the opener. Jimmy clearly stole the idea for the Intro to Stairway from Taurus. Plus Randy filled in for Ritchie Blackmore for one Deep Purple show in Quebec in 1972. A bootleg of this recording was recently released. | Tommy Bolin Archives
