Still figuring this part out. With perianal Crohn’s, fluid drainage is part of the deal. Seton drains help it exit the body so it doesn’t get trapped and cause infections. Sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve tried every medication and biologic out there. For some people, it stops the drainage. For me, not yet. The colostomy has helped a ton, but the area still needs time to heal. A full reversal is possible if that happens, and that’s still the goal, but I have zero expectat

People see the outside version of your life. They don’t see the mental work behind it. The constant check-ins with your body. The doubt. The uncertainty. The part where you stop explaining because it feels like no one can meet you there. Chronic illness changes how you think and how you move through your day. It’s not only physical. There’s a mental cost to this that’s hard to explain to anyone who hasn’t lived it. If you’re carrying that quiet weight, you’re not weak. You’re living something mo

One of the hardest parts after surgery isn’t physical. It’s feeling like no one around you really gets it. @alex_mcpherson04 talks about what changed once he connected with people who understood the experience firsthand. Episode 2 of Bag & Paddle is live. Link in bio. | Rob Nunnery

What do setons ACTUALLY do? Seton drains keep the fistula tracts open and draining. When they don’t drain? Pressure builds → abscess → potential sepsis. Abscess means fever, chills, and fatigue that actually knock me out. Every surgery is an “exam under anesthesia” - they map where the tracts are, place the drains, tie them off. Disease moves, they adjust. New tract forms without a drain? Same cycle starts again. This is what keeps me out of the hospital. | Rob Nunnery

Some days the reminder is so simple. I get to do this. After everything the last few years threw at me, being on a court, helping kids, competing, or simply sharing laughs with people feels like such a gift. The truth is that Crohn’s and the ostomy still knock me down after days like this. But staying connected to this community helps me get through it as much as anything else. Grateful for days like this, even if it wipes me out for a bit after. | Rob Nunnery

3 AM. The kind of pain that pulls you out of sleep. You deal with it, because there’s no choice. Clean it. Calm it. Try again. This part never makes the highlight reel, but it’s real life. | Rob Nunnery

Talking about fistulas. Not glamorous. Not fun. Necessary. My Crohn’s never hit my gut, just my butt. Literal pain in the ass. | Rob Nunnery

Here's what managing fistula pain actually looks like. The research documented a brutal cycle: unrelenting pain leads to medication, medication brings crushing fatigue, fatigue makes pain worse, repeat forever. My version? Gabapentin at doses that would sedate most people. Barely touched the pain but left me dizzy, exhausted, uncoordinated. Not a great combo when you're trying to compete at a professional level in sport. The real kicker isn't the pain itself. It's that it never fully goes away.

Made it through another year with chronic illness. That counts for something. Got a colostomy in February. Pain's back. Spent the year trying treatments that didn't work, managing exhaustion, doing things that looked normal but felt impossible. But I also made brave choices. Did surgeries I was scared of. Found joy in watching a panda eat bamboo in China. Kept going even when I didn't want to. If you're reading this and you have chronic illness: you did hard things this year that nobody saw. You

Some health battles you can’t see. When I was going through the worst of my Crohn’s with fistulas and chronic infections, I looked fine on the outside. But inside, I was barely hanging on. It’s not the kind of pain that spikes and goes away. It’s deep, unrelenting, and exhausting. You can’t plan anything. You cancel on people. You start to feel isolated. If that’s you right now, you can cancel on me anytime you please :) This video’s for anyone quietly fighting their own battle. | Rob Nunnery

Day 12: A charge nurse threatened to write me up last night. For asking for my medication. While I was at level 10 pain. In a hospital. Let me back up. When you’re in chronic pain there is nothing more consuming than watching a clock. Counting down the minutes until your next medication is due. Because when you fall behind, it takes hours to catch back up. Hours of level 10 pain where you can’t think, can’t speak, can’t do anything but stare at the ceiling and try to disappear. The timer hit. No

First day of discharge. Two weeks post-op. They removed my rectum and sewed my anus shut hoping to end four years of pain. The surgery went well. My surgical team was incredible. Dr. De Leon gave me a chance at a life without this disease. But recovery has been nothing like I expected. A complication nobody planned for. Hospital care that failed me repeatedly. And this morning, my first morning waking up outside of a hospital bed, the medication plan we agreed on got changed without my consent.

$1,386/month for health insurance I can barely use. Living abroad with chronic illness means choosing between opportunities and healthcare. No international plan covers pre-existing conditions, not at any price. So I'm paying $16K/year for US coverage because the alternative is having nothing. The healthcare system doesn't just fail people with chronic illness. It traps us. If you've dealt with this, drop a comment. If you haven't, please share so people understand what navigating chronic illnes

The hardest part of playing pro pickleball with an ostomy isn’t the match. It’s the prep. Wake at 4:30. Coffee. Clear the bag. Tape secure. Belt tight. Backups ready. Plain food only. By the time I step on court, I’ve already put in hours just to compete. 👉 For more behind-the-scenes ostomy content, hit follow. 📌 Save this or send it to someone battling their own challenges. | Rob Nunnery
