Well, this is new: a bowhead whale! This is the first bowhead whale sighting in southeast Alaska. A team of scientists working in Sitka Sound observed the whale in March 2024. It’s the second reported sighting in eastern North Pacific waters south of the Aleutian Island chain. The crew were using a 25-foot motorboat in Sitka Sound to photograph and identify humpback whales feeding in the area. They were heading back to shore when they spotted this whale.
