Southeast Denton's history is rooted in the formerly thriving community of Quakertown, which was destroyed in the 1920s and 1930s when residents were forced to relocate to this area. Many of these families became descendants of the Solomon Hill community and established new neighborhoods in the southeast, which are now also under threat from modern-day gentrification. The broader area has a much longer history of settlement, beginning in the 1840s as part of the Peters Colony. #dentontx #quakert

“Quakertown” Denton, Texas 📍 For almost five decades, there existed at this location a thriving, vibrant, and cohesive community called Quaker by its residents, and known as Quakertown to the wider community. Quakertown functioned as a town within a town - with its own school, churches, mutual aid organizations, businesses, and private residences - offering opportunities unavailable elsewhere in Jim Crow Denton. The community emerged in the late 1870s when several families in Denton began to bu

Black residents of Quakertown in Denton, Texas were forced out in the early 1920s when White city leaders passed a bond to tear down their thriving neighborhood and replace it with a Whites-only park near the women’s college, using discriminatory practices and fear to justify buying them out and pushing families to the city’s edge. This home 🏠 is now part of Denton County Historical Park. #historybeforeus #history #dentontexas #historichome #texashistory #historymatters | History Before Us
