The reed beds at Blacktoft are a fantastic hunting ground for Hen Harriers during the autumn and winter seasons. Thanks to regulars Jeff and Andy for getting me on to the bird as it displayed it's twisty turny flying skills. Kingfisher was showing well again today as well! #eastcoastwetlands #humber #nature | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

The reedbeds here and around the Humber are a vital feed ground for hen harriers (seen again today), marsh harriers, bitterns and bearded tits. They are also vital for some of our smaller inhabitants like reed buntings, helping them stay as fit and healthy as possible over winter so they are in the best condition possible for the breeding season. This female was taking seeds from this reed head earlier. #eastcoastwetlands #nature #humber | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

Lovely to see and hear this little herd of Whooper Swans this morning that had roosted overnight on Reedling Lagoon, but they were keen to get on their way and continued southward shortly after leaving the Island. #eastcoastwetlands | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

In what seems to be the rare interludes between the rain it great to see the reserve come alive at this time of year as we head towards spring. Lots of the birds are pairing or trying to attract a mate, others are taking advantage of the rich food sources on the reserve ready for their breeding season. Here's just a few of the things we've 'caught on camera' over the last few days. #eastcoastwetlands #humber #nature | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

Our recently desilted and land formed lagoons go from strength to strength with this morning on high tide over 440 Dunlin (a Red listed species) and 430 lapwings roosting on them while also sheltering from the wind and rain. This group of Dunlins was on Ousefleet, great to see this increase in usage by the waders bringing the total number of birds using both the lagoons to just over 5000 in the last month and a half! #eastcoastwetlands FCC Communities Foundation | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

Gusting easterly winds on the tail end of storm Amy has kept many birds hunkered down this morning but great to see this wood sandpiper briefly. The marsh harriers enjoy a 'stiff breeze' and have been zooming around the lagoons - which caused the wood sandpiper to move on from Reedling lagoon. Black-tailed godwit, spotted redshank, redshank, ruff, lapwing and snipe were sheltering too. #eastcoastwetlands #humber #nature | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

A lovely bright start to the day with these beautiful Lapwings in front of Marshland hide chasing each other and calling. Other highlights included Hen Harrier (sparing with a Marsh Harrier), Kingfisher, Goldeneye, 200 Fieldfare, & 6 Whooper Swans. Yesterday there was Water Pipit at Ousefleet. | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

We still had at least one Curlew Sandpiper around today on the high tide, but in this now advanced plumage its not easy to pick it out, especially when its often snoozing! #eastcoastwetlands | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

With the tides rising to some of the biggest of the year a few waders including three Curlew Sandpipers today (two of them on the video) are starting to roost on the lagoons. Also of note were seven Spotted Redshank, Kingfisher and ringtail Hen Harrier. What better way to thank our Members in Members Thank You Week by having some great birds to see! Hopefully tomorrow mornings big tide won't flood the paths, its always a fine line to tread! | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

After spending their breeding season in Iceland whooper swans will often migrate in family groups around 500 miles to their UK wintering grounds, often returning to the same sites year after year introducing their offspring. This family of 7 that dropped onto Reedling lagoon could be familiar with the Humber estuary after wintering here before. Kingfisher also showing well on Marshland. #eastcoastwetlands #humber #nature | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

The tundra bean geese weren't an easy spot yesterday flocking with the pink-footed geese and greylags but they are still feeding on local farmland next to the reserve frequently. 20 black-tailed godwits and a single ruff on ousefleet lagoon this morning before a marsh harrier flushed them. Marsh harriers are beginning to interact more with a male showing off to females earlier too. #eastcoastwetlands #humber #nature | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year. We've started off our year list for 2026 in fine style. At the top of the list - Marsh Harrier of course, closely followed by ringtailed hen harrier, sparrowhawk, buzzard, tree sparrow, dunlin and lapwing to name but a few. #eastcoastwetlands #humber #nature | RSPB Blacktoft Sands

Leopard Survives 6 Metre Fall After Fighting Rival For those who are looking to keep up with leopard dynamics in Sabi Sands, things have been heating up around Chitwa Chitwa after the disappearance of the much-loved Molwati male. The Tortoise Pan male has taken that gap as an opportunity to expand his territory, a move that brought him straight into the path of a younger male believed to be the Nottens leopard. The message delivered was quick and brutal, and came as a harsh lesson for an inexper

An interesting little flock of Barnacle Geese probably grounded by the fog, they were reported yesterday and roosted overnight on Ousefleet grazing marsh. We do have a large feral population nearby but these are very rarely seen on the reserve. To make matters more intriguing the birds took off and flew west giving some indication at this time of year that they may have been wild birds from Svarlbard on their way to the Solway. #eastcoastwetlands | RSPB Blacktoft Sands
