Sentinels in the Sky: 50 Years of GOES Satellite Observations - NASA Science
the development and evolution of NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) has been a major achievement for weather forecasting. For 50 years, GOES have kept a constant vigil over the Western Hemisphere and monitored the Sun and the near-Earth environment.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center has outlined an enhanced risk of severe weather for parts of the Mid-Mississippi River and Lower Ohio River Valleys on Tuesday (2/28). Large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes are possible. Heavy rainfall in these regions will also increase the threat of flash flooding. The area where these severe storms are likely to occur can be seen in this GOES composite colorized infrared imagery captured earlier today, February 28, 2017. Composite ima

NOAA's newest satellite is showing us how stunning Earth's ocean truly is. Launched in late June and reaching geostationary orbit on July 7th, NOAA recently released the first images from the GOES-19 satellite. This satellite orbits 22,236 miles (35,785 km) above the equator at the same speed the Earth rotates, which allows it to track weather conditions in real time, such as wildfires, dust storms, volcanic eruptions, and hurricanes. GOES-19 is the final satellite NOAA will launch in the GOES-R

As NOAA's revolutionary new satellite, GOES-16, comes to life on orbit and prepares for its mission, forecasters and researchers on the ground are preparing to take advantage of the massive increase in data flow and enhanced images the satellite will provide. To do that, scientists have placed GOES-14, a current geostationary satellite serving as an on-orbit back-up, into a rapid scan mode, known as Super Rapid Scan Operations for GOES-R or SRSO-R. In this mode, the satellite can capture an imag
