22K views · 470 reactions | This fierce ‘lava dome fountain’ erupted at the inlet to the lava lake in the Halema’uma’u crater on Kīlauea, Hawaii, at the start of 2021. This phenomenon occurs when lava bursts out of a tight space such as a constricted vent, or, as in this case, from beneath the surface of a lava lake.
