🏁On May 24, 1981 the 65th annual Indy 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Bobby Unser crosses the finish line first, but is penalized a lap by track stewards and Mario Andretti is named the winner. However, Unser and car-owner Roger Penske will appeal the decision to the U.S. Auto Club, and four months later they win their case. It is Unser's third Indy 500 victory. The race is also remembered for the horrifying crash of Danny Ongais, and a major pit fire involving Rick Mears. Onga

Back in 1981 at the Indy 500, something truly scary happened during Rick Mears’ pit stop on lap 58. Fuel spilled, and a fire started in the pit, but what made it even scarier was that the flames were invisible because they were made of methanol. 🔥 Like history?
