95% of the time pre mixed shellac out of a can is just fine. Sure it’s a little thicker than you would usually want but thinning it out is easy. Sometimes though it is worth it to mix up your own. Since shellac is an alcohol based solution it can be tinted different colors and the canned version only comes in two: blonde and amber. That’s when I mix up my own.
