Hubble Captures Vivid Auroras in Jupiter’s Atmosphere
Jun 30, 2016 · Astronomers are using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to study auroras — stunning light shows in a planet’s atmosphere — on the poles of the largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter. This observation program is supported by measurements made by NASA’s Juno spacecraft, currently on its way to Jupiter.
Jupiter's Northern and Southern Auroras - HubbleSite
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured a complete view of Jupiter's northern and southern auroras. Images taken in ultraviolet light by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) show both auroras, the oval- shaped objects in the inset photos.
Aurora Borealis on Jupiter - NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
Dec 18, 1997 · The aurora is dynamic on Jupiter, just as it is here on Earth. The eerie, glowing light is created when molecules in the upper atmosphere are struck by charge particles from the space around Jupiter. Fluctuations in the charged particle flow …
Auroras on Jupiter - HubbleSite
Jun 30, 2016 · Astronomers are using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to study auroras – stunning light shows in a planet's atmosphere – on the poles of the largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter.
Auroras - NASA Science
Feb 4, 2025 · Auroras are vibrant light displays created when energetic particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. These events, also seen on other planets like Saturn and Jupiter, result in a range of colors depending on altitude and the atmospheric gases involved. Scientists study auroras using tools like rockets, balloons, and ground-based instruments, while public ...
Timelapse of Jupiter’s auroras - ESA/Hubble
Jun 30, 2016 · This timelapse video of the vivid auroras in Jupiter’s atmosphere was created using observations made with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. Hubble is particularly suited to observing and studying the auroras on the biggest planet in the Solar System, as they are brightest in the ultraviolet.

Jupiter's aurora up close - The Planetary Society
Nov 26, 1998 · Jupiter's aurora up close Auroras around Jupiter's north pole, imaged in the ultraviolet by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. A main ring is visible along with diffuse glows within it, as well as bright spots caused by magnetic connections to some of the planet's moons. The spot to the far left corresponds to Io, and the spots below the main ...
Jupiter Aurora - NASA Science
Dec 16, 2004 · NASA's Earth-orbiting Hubble Space Telescope and Saturn-bound Cassini spacecraft recently provided scientists an opportunity to watch whether changes in Jupiter's glowing auroras correspond in timing to fluctuations in the solar wind reaching Jupiter.
Jupiter’s Atmosphere Heats up under Solar Wind - NASA
Apr 8, 2019 · New Earth-based telescope observations show that auroras at Jupiter’s poles are heating the planet’s atmosphere to a greater depth than previously thought — and that it is a rapid response to the solar wind.
