A leader of the Cartel del Noreste, who smuggled drugs into the South Texas border town of Laredo, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

A top Sinaloa Cartel leader in the Mexican state of Chihuahua has been arrested, the local attorney general's office said.

Claudia Sheinbaum said the U.S. Justice Department itself has recognized that "74% of the weapons" used by criminal groups in Mexico come from north of the border.

"We need to go on the offense. We don't need to be cowering in our holes," Congressman Keith Self told Newsweek.
