More states in the northern U.S. will have a chance of seeing aurora borealis on Friday, as high-speed winds from a spot on the sun’s surface may affect the Earth’s magnetic field, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

During Valentine's Day weekend, northern parts of America, including Maine, may have a chance of seeing an aurora. But space weather scientists warn that the chances of this happening are slim.

Aspiring viewers of the Northern Lights are encouraged to go as far north as possible, away from light pollution, and face the northern horizon. The best time to view the lights is between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, and a high vantage point increases the likelihood of seeing the phenomena.

The Northern Lights may be visible this week as fast solar winds are heading to the UK. The country has recently experienced some incredible solar storms that have lit up the night skies with an array of colours.

Last year, the lights were visible from as far south as Kent and East Anglia, which was rare, as the natural phenomenon can normally only be seen from the northernmost reaches of the UK. According to the Met Office, people in the Shetland Islands and northern Scotland could expect to see the Northern Lights from around 9pm this evening.

The Valentine's Day northern lights will largely be visible in Canada and Alaska, but a few northern-most states may see the dazzling display, too.
