The New York Jets surprised both fans and analysts around the league when they announced a trio of interviews for their open head coaching job. Arguably the biggest surprise wasn't the man with previous coaching experience in Brian Flores. It wasn't even the defensive coordinator with college coaching experience in Jeff Hafley. It was Josh McCown.

The Jets have completed an interview with Josh McCown for their head coach vacancy, the team announced Friday afternoon.

The jump from position coach to head coach is unusual but not unprecedented. A great example of it working is Andy Reid, who went from Packers quarterbacks coach to Eagles head coach in 1999. Reid has won 273 regular season games, the fourth most in NFL history, and has won three Super Bowls with the Chiefs.

Like it or not, the Jets are heavily affected by a move like this. McCown interviewed for the top job Friday afternoon but many fans hoped he would be an offensive coordinator to an experienced coach like Brian Flores if the team made those moves.

The trio increased the list to 15 coaching candidates to meet with the Jets, who have also conducted 15 interviews for their general manager job.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reports that Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown will interview with the team. McCown won’t be the only member of the Vikings staff to meet with the Jets on Friday as defensive coordinator Brian Flores is also set for an interview.
