The Washington Commanders and Washington D.C. agreed to a deal to construct a new football stadium at the site of RFK Stadium, where they played from 1961 to 1996, they announced Monday.

Washington’s NFL franchise is set to return to the nation’s capital. Mayor Muriel Bowser says the District of Columbia and the Commanders reached an agreement to construct a new home for the football team in the city on the site of the old RFK Stadium.

ESPN's John Keim first reported on Sunday that the Commanders agreed to a deal with the District of Columbia to build a new stadium where RFK Stadium still stands. The franchise played at RFK Stadium from 1961 to 1996 and won all three of its Super Bowls during that span.
