The situation previews a series of looming clashes between Trump’s personal interests and lawmakers’ professed principles.

Steve Bannon, who has many axes to grind, said Sunday on ABC’s This Week that it’s wrong to think of the tech billionaires as oligarchs running the country. Instead, they are “supplicants”: “President Trump broke the oligarchs, he broke them and they surrendered,” Bannon said.

Trump said the government should be a half owner of TikTok's U.S. business in return for keeping the app alive, and threatened China with tariffs if it failed to approve a deal.

While Trump gained praise from users for the reprieve, he faces long-time skeptics in his own Republican Party about what they see as the app’s ongoing national security threat.
