News publisher Guardian Media Group says it is in talks to sell The Observer newspaper to “slow news” outlet Tortoise Media

Guardian Media Group has confirmed an exclusive Sky News report that it is negotiating the sale of the world's oldest newspaper to a five year-old media start-up.

The world's oldest Sunday newspaper is to be sold to a news venture founded five years ago in a deal which would see GMG offload it after 31 years, Sky News can exclusively reveal.

The Observer, first published in 1791, could be bought by Tortoise Media, an outlet founded by a British media veteran that began publishing in 2019.

The owner of the Guardian has confirmed it is in talks to sell the Observer, the world's oldest Sunday newspaper, to Tortoise Media. Tortoise has approached Guardian Media Group (GMG) with an offer to invest around £25m over the next five years on the "editorial and commercial renewal" of the Observer.
