Governor Abbott has mobilized state emergency resources and agencies to prepare for a severe arctic cold front expected to bring life-threatening temperatures and hazardous winter weather to Texas.
Forecasters on Tuesday expressed fears that an ice storm arriving late this week and into the weekend could weigh down power lines, sending them crashing and causing widespread power outages. Temperatures will be slow to warm in many areas, meaning ice that forms on roads and sidewalks might stick around, forecasters say.
ATLANTA — The ingredients are aligning for the first major winter storm of 2026. The massive system is expected to bring rain, snow, freezing rain and sleet from Texas across the Deep South into the Mid-Atlantic starting Friday and lasting through Sunday.
NBC 5's Chief Meteorologist Rick Mitchell said forecasters expect the storm to bring moderate to heavy accumulations of snow, sleet and ice. Travel is expected to be hazardous, and power outages are possible. Friday will feature an Arctic cold front moving into North Texas. Precipitation will start as cold rain, persisting into the early evening.

Texas Rangers cancel Fan Fest ahead due to incoming winter storm
ARLINGTON, Texas - The incoming winter storm has caused the Texas Rangers to cancel their annual Fan Fest event scheduled for this weekend. Fan Fest was due to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Globe Life Field in Arlington. Due to the expected frozen precipitation in North Texas this weekend, the event has been canceled.
