Meteorologists predict this tropical wave might turn into Tropical Storm Gabrielle
Following a lull during the peak of hurricane season, forecasters are tracking a system with a high chance of turning into a cyclone.
The National Hurricane Center said a tropical depression is likely to form by the middle to later part of this week.
Earth Sciences New Zealand analysis estimates more than 800,000 landslides were caused by the extreme weather event.
"We expect tropical storm Gabrielle to form by the end of this weekend or early next week," AccuWeather lead hurricane expert Alex DaSilva said.
Hurricane Helene, which formed in the Gulf and took an inland route to the mountains of North Carolina, caused record flooding and more than 2,000 landslides across the Southern Appalachian mountains last September, though it had weakened to tropical storm strength by then.
A tropical wave has been designated as Invest 91L. It's likely to become a tropical depression by the weekend.
