Federal auto safety regulators have opened an investigation into why Tesla has repeatedly broken rules requiring it to tell them quickly about crashes involving its self-driving technology that may soon be deployed in millions of its cars on U.

The rule is to submit a report within five days. It takes Tesla months.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating Tesla, alleging it is failing to report crashes in a timely manner.
