The U.S. Senate this week is moving to pass a bill that immigration attorneys and experts warn could have far-reaching ramifications, such as swamping federal courts with challenges by state attorneys general and subjecting some migrants — including children and teens — to rapid detention and deportation.

Under the bill, called the Laken Riley Act, state attorneys general like Ken Paxton would have the ability to challenge federal immigration officials.

The bill would require immigration officers to detain immigrants who are suspected of minor theft and cede some federal immigration enforcement power to states.

Bill requires law enforcement to arrest and detain any undocumented immigrants accused of theft, burglary and other related crimes.
