In “His Three Daughters,” sisters gather in their father's tiny apartment and wait for his death. The film, streaming Friday on Netflix, stars Elizabeth Olsen, Carrie Coon and Natasha Lyonne as very different and very estranged family members.

To hail the acting in His Three Daughters as “accomplished” and “raw” is to miss that it’s actually the inverse. Most of the cast feel stuck on a stage, doing the modern equivalent of cut-rate Chekhov.

Grief is a mischievous little monster. You never know how it will come out or what it will make you do. It eats you from the inside and it affects everyone around you. Family, friends, work colleagues – nobody is safe and nobody ever says the right thing.
