Marco Rubio has been sworn in to be Donald Trump's new secretary of state, and another familiar Florida name has joined the Senate in his place.

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ announcement that he’s appointing Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Marco Rubio places the 49-year-old Plant City native in an exotic locale far from home.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has chosen Ashley Moody to replace Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate. Moody, Florida’s Attorney General, will be the second woman to represent Florida in the Senate, following fellow Republican Paula Hawkins who served from 1981-1987.

DeSantis said he wanted an appointee who would be strong on immigration enforcement, support cutting the federal bureaucracy and fight “the woke agenda.”

Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody will take Marco Rubio‘s seat in the U.S. Senate, Gov.Ron DeSantis announced Thursday, making Moody only the second woman to represent Florida in the chamber.

Moody, 49, becomes the second woman to represent Florida in the U.S. Senate, after Paula Hawkins, a Republican who served one term in the 1980s.

Vice President J.D. Vance swore in the former Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody as a new senator this week. The Senate seat was filled as Rubio was confirmed to be President Donald Trump’s Secretary of State.

Senate Republicans hit their full 53-member majority on Tuesday as Sens. John Husted (R-Ohio) and Ashley Moody (R-Fla.) were sworn into office by Vice President Vance. The pair cemented the full majority after weeks of being stuck at 51 or 52 GOP members.
