U.S. Customs and Border Protection claimed late on Friday that imported electronics, such as smartphones, laptops and more, would be exempt from Trump’s tariffs.

Tariff exemptions on cell phones and other electronic devices are only temporary, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Sunday, adding to an already confusing situation around the United States' economic policy.

Such finger-pointing fees would inevitably alienate some customers, which is why the surcharges aren’t expected to be prominent features of post-tariff shopping. Still, some business owners say it’s better to tell shoppers directly why the cost of their goods are rising.
