Authorities are searching for answers into the death of actor Gene Hackman, 95, who along with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, were mysteriously found dead in Santa Fe.

Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa both tested negative for carbon monoxide after their deaths, Adan Mendoza, the sheriff of Santa Fe County in New Mexico, said at a press conference on Friday, Feb. 28.

Unseen for much of the last two decades, Hackman won Oscars for The French Connection (1971) and Clint Eastwood ‘s Unforgiven (1992), and was Oscar-nominated for roles in Bonnie and Clyde (1967), I Never Sang for My Father (1970), and Mississippi Burning (1988). Awards nonwithstanding, the respected and admired Hackman had a wide range.
