SAN JOSE, Calif. - A 3.4 earthquake rocked some parts of the South Bay, reaching a 3.4 on the Ritcher scale. The earthquake struck around 3:15 p.m., with its epicenter a little under 4 miles east-northeast of East Foothills and 9 miles east-northeast of San Jose, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

An earthquake centered in the Malibu area with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 rattled parts of Southern California early Thursday.

The tremor struck at 3:15 p.m. northeast of the Alum Rock area with a depth of approximately 5 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The agency has not recorded any aftershocks, and there have not been any reports of damage. According to the USGS “Did you feel it?” report, at least 1,174 people said they felt the earthquake.

MEMA issued the alert shortly before 4:30 p.m. informing residents that "shaking may have been felt in some areas, but a tsunami was not generated."
