After winning a gold medal at the Japan Olympics and leaving college wrestling in 2022, Gable Steveson announced Tuesday that he’s coming back to compete for the Gophers.

Gable Steveson of Apple Valley, an Olympic gold medalist in 2021, two-time NCAA champion and two-time Hodge Trophy winner, is back in action for a fifth year of competition in the 2024-24 season, head coach Brandon Eggum announced Tuesday.

The Apple Valley native is expected to make his season debut on Nov. 24 against Campbell. He last competed in the 2021-22 season, which he finished with a 52-match winning streak.

Gable Steveson is returning to the University of Minnesota for a fifth season. Minnesota Coach Brandon Eggum announced that Steveson would return for the 2024-2025 season. He will aim to win his third heavyweight championship as a heavyweight wrestler in the NCAA.

Steveson won gold as a freestyle heavyweight in Tokyo at age 21, then won his second national title at Minnesota in 2022 before retiring. Now 24, the two-time Hodge Trophy winner as the nation’s top collegiate wrestler returns on a 52-match win streak.
